Simply Caprese
July 7, 2020
Simply Caprese . Ingredients you can count on your hand, prep equals placing ingredients on a plate and for flavoring... well, you step back and let the ingredients do their job! It’s as simple as that when it comes to a good Caprese! . Sliced fresh mozzarella and tomatoes laid out alternately, topped with shreds of fresh basil, a sprinkle of salt, a sprinkle of cracked black pepper (optional), a drizzle of balsamic glaze and some extra virgin olive oil. That is it! But the result is an absolute burst of color, aroma and flavor to please all your senses. . The most crucial word here: FRESH! Freshness of ingredients is hands down the only thing you need to worry about. Use the mozzarella within a couple of days of bringing home from the store. Do not sit on it. The tomatoes should have a good fresh bite. No room for our soggy friends... they can dazzle that marinara! The basil - this I cannot stress enough. Fresh leaves only. No packaged dry stuff. Once you go fresh, you won’t ever go back! (Mine came from our backyard herb garden, thanks to the husband 😊). On to the balsamic - this is usually an optional ingredient, but I would highly recommend it. And go for the glaze, never the vinegar. I am a big fan of the fig balsamic glaze from @thefreshmarket. It’s the perfect combination of sweet & tart and holds up consistency sitting on a plate, does not water down. . Time to dig in... this beautiful plated expression is calling my name! . Make it.
