Good over evil. Love over hate.

October 25, 2020

Good over evil. Love over hate. Happy Dussehra to all who celebrate. . According to the Ramayana, today is the day when Lord Ram defeated Raavan and thus good prevailed over evil. . A friend shared a very simple explanation of Dussehra this morning. Sharing it below - . Dasha (10) Hara (kill/defeat) is a Sanskrit word, which means removal of ten undesirable qualities: * Kama vasana (Lust) * Krodha (Anger) * Moha (Attachment) * Lobha (Greed) * Mada (Over Pride) * Matsara (Jealousy) * Swartha (Selfishness) * Anyaaya (Injustice) * Amanavta (Cruelty) * Ahankara (Ego) It is also known as 'Vijaydashami' which means Victory over these ten binding qualities. . To celebrate, I went with the very simple sweet halwa. To make: In a wok, roast 1 cup semolina in approx 1/2 cup ghee until it’s golden and almost dry. Add approx. 2 cups of boiling milk little at a time, mixing well, removing lumps. Cover and steam for a bit. Add 3/4 cup sugar, handful golden raisins, a couple of spoons of doodh masala (cardamom seeds, cloves, cashews, almonds, pistachios and pinch of nutmeg zest) and 1 crushed banana (optional). Mix well until halwa separates from the edges of the wok. Add a sprinkle of hot milk, a few strands of saffron, cover and steam for a few minutes. Top with chopped/slivered almonds and serve warm. . Adorning the frame with today’s plated expression is the gold leaf that holds a significant place in Dussehra celebrations... Today is all about gold. . Make it. Share it.
